Today Google Silently updated the pixel support page mentioning that Pixel phones are guaranteed 5 years of updates – which includes 5 years of OS and security updates – starting from when they went on sale. While the 8 and 9 series are in 7 year update cycle. It’s an amazing day for pixel fans, especially for pixel 6 fans who resisted the temptation of buying the Pixel 8 and 9 series.
Pixel 6 Series, Pixel 7 Series and Pixel fold will get 2 more years of updates
Now Pixel 6 series(Pixel 6, Pixel 6 pro, Pixel 6a) will get Android 16 and Android 17 updates, Pixel 7 series(Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a) and Pixel fold will get updates till Android 18.
This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops.
This change is after google rolled out Android 16 Developer preview to Pixel 6 series too. Google hasn’t officially announced it but it has silently updated the pixel support page which confirms the update cycle.
This good news is not just for existing pixel 6 and 7 series users but also for users who were holding back from getting these devices at a discounted price.
There is no change in older devices, this upgrade is only for Tensor Powered Pixels i.e starting from Pixel 6.
Google wants to showcase its Tensor powered devices are more capable of snapdragon powered Pixels.
